Steward Medical Group at Hawthorn Medical Associates is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated Coding Supervisor to join our team.

General Summary/Overview

Oversees coding and the coding clerical functions of coding department, including coding reviews, coding competency, training, and education. Ensures coding compliance and knowledge of regulatory rules and regulations. Monitors and audits quality and quantity of coding, charging and data entry according to department’s standards.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. The senior coder shall, in conjunction with the Coding Director, be responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of the Coding department.
  2. Review physician documentation for the purposes of risk adjustment utilizing the current ICD-9 Coding guidelines.
  3. Have a working knowledge of ICD-10 implementation, conventions, and guidelines
  4. Be able to travel monthly to Providers offices to provide coding education/support
  5. Performs with internal and external service excellence by welcoming patients/customers/employees in a warm, friendly manner. Actively listen and constructively respond to questions and concerns in a timely manner.
  6. Ensures that the dignity of the patient/customer/employee is maintained at all times.
  7. Respects the diversity of the patient/customer/employee population.


Credentialed as RHIT/RHIA and/or CCS/CPC. At least three (3) years coding management experience including supervision, training and quality improvement, is preferred. Must have completed ICD -10 training and have strong knowledge of local, as well as, national regulations governing correct coding initiatives. Knowledgeable in Urgent Care Department record E&M codes and ambulatory classification

Skills and Abilities Required:

Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Be a self-starter and have the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. Extensive knowledge and experience in abstracting clinical information from inpatient and outpatient medical records and assigning appropriate ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 codes with a strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of third-party payer requirements and guidelines. Must possess strong analytical skills, accurate typing and computer skills; including Outlook, Excel and Word. Ability to handle sensitive matters on a confidential basis. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
