The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner will be a member of the Otolaryngology Department, with responsibility assisting as needed in the OR, clinic, ER and on the wards. The PA/NP will function under the direction and supervision of a Physician in any area they are assisting. The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner provides high quality, cost-effective patient care by performing surgical preparation procedures, peri-operative, and post-operative procedures, and medical management. The PA/NP will assist in performing surgical and other procedures in the OR and clinic.


The PA/NP will perform detailed histories and physical exams, review patient medical records, order laboratory studies, radiological and diagnostic studies appropriate to patient’s complaint, age, sex, race and physical condition. Participate in daily inpatient rounds, when inpatients are present, record appropriate and accurate daily progress notes, and coordinate with the department’s Fellows in all aspects of patient care. The PA/NP will provide patients and families with preoperative and other pertinent education. The PA/NP will answer questions regarding surgery, recovery and risk factor modification, procedures, either in person or by phone. The PA/NP will arrange for hospital admission and discharge at the direction of the supervising physician and is expected to take first on-call 1 day per week.

Once trained, to perform or assist in the following procedures as allowed per medical staff privileges:

  • Wound management
  • Fiberoptic laryngoscopy
  • Surgical consults in the ED or on the wards
  • Tracheostomy tube changes
  • Cerumen removal
  • Nasal sinus endoscopy, including the control of epistaxis
  • Suture removal and wound maintenance
  • Allergy skin prick testing


  • Massachusetts license to practice as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner
  • DEA/Massachusetts Controlled Substance licensure
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience preferred
