Lead Physical Therapist
Job Description
Administers and directs administration of physical agents utilized in the short and long term rehabilitation of in and out-patients (orthopedic, neurological, pulmonary, obstetrical, cardiac, medical and surgical) referred by staff physicians, house officers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, courtesy staff physicians, podiatrists, dentists, and osteopaths; acts as a clinical specialist/committee chair/program coordinator.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares and supervises aides in the preparation of patients for treatment via proper draping and positioning.
- Evaluates patient’s emotional and physical condition; explains treatment to patient/family/others; performs MMT and ROM along with any other tests needed.
- Applies or supervises aides in application agents such as; TENS, Ultrasound, Electrical Stimulation, Hot Packs, Paraffin, HVGS, Cervical and Lumbar Traction, Whirlpool, Massage Biodex, etc…
- Evaluate and treats patients with cardiac and respiratory problems or a potential for same, as required, using various techniques and modalities as indicated, carries out instruction in deep breathing exercises, coughing, huffing, ADL, pre-op teaching; performs ROM, conditioning, relaxation, and strengthening exercises; does evaluation with maintenance or corrective exercises; assists with progressive ambulation and performs facial and mouth exercise as needed.
- Evaluates patients during treatment to determine effectiveness and safety; reports to and recommends changes to physicians if indicated; discusses or clarifies order with referring physician; discusses problems with other staff members for input and ideas.
- Instructs patients/family/others as indicated in treatment goals, home programs, and in-hospital self exercise.
- Maintains records pertinent to patient evaluations and treatment; follows set guideline for evaluation and record keeping.
- Participates in quarterly rotation (i.e. impatient orthopedics, outpatient orthopedics, inpatient general med-surg, inpatient neurology, inpatient cardiac, outpatient cardiac).
- Follows department policies and procedures; maintains a high level of safety for patients and property.
- Assists in the orientation and training of new PT employees in their specialty area.
- Assists, directs and instructs ancillary and other personnel as necessary.
- Studies current trends and new development in physical medicine physical medicine by survey of literature, attendance at professional meetings and conferences, and participation in department in-services.
- Participates in the training of physical therapy students from AOTA approved programs.
- Participates in the TQM/CQI process through audits, peer review, CareMapping, and other Quality Council approved activities.
- Maintains standards set down by the AOTA regarding treatment procedure and professional ethics.
- Participates in the development of new programs and clinical services.
- Begins to develop knowledge based in the area of expertise, acting as a resources person and liaison between interdisciplinary staff and therapists, participating in multidisciplinary meetings.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Commits to recognize and respect cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).
- Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned including being the lead PT of the team. Reporting to manager and communicating to team of new processes, policies, ect
Knowledge and Skills:
- Meets or exceeds performance standards for a minimum of two years at PT Level I at SEMC or the equivalent.
- Meets basic competency level of two clinical rotations
- Strong orientation to patient care in accordance with the medical center’s values, particularly the holistic approach to healing.
- Ability to deal with stress due to a fast paced and growing environment.
- Ability to manage within a flexible schedule.
- Ability to work independently with sound decision making skills.
- Demonstrate beginning supervisory skills.
Qualifications:
- Education: Graduate of an APTA accredited program. Bachelor of Science Degree and/or Certificate in Physical Therapy.
- Experience (Type & Length):
- Certification/Licensure: Massachusetts licensed or license eligible. Current CPR certification. Training in continuing education annually.
