I. Position Function:

• Acts in clinical and administrative leadership role for professional group of Nurse Practitioners (NP).
• Works closely with senior or lead practitioner in individual areas to determine schedules and assignments.
• Assists with problem-solving and represents the activities of NPs in practice-wide efforts and issues.
• Oversees recruitment and evaluation of midlevel practitioners.
• Will have 24/7 accountability for the clinical practice of midlevel practitioners.

II. Job Relationships:

• Reports to director of midlevel practitioners for administrative issues and support.
• Reports to appropriate supervising physician for clinical guidelines and practice issues.
• Collaborates with appropriate practice administrators.
• Oversees assignments, coverage and practice of NP’s.
• Collaborates with practice staff and physicians.
• Coordinates the orientation of new midlevel practitioners to routines and expectations of inpatient services.

III. Authority:

• Has the authority to assign call, hours on duty, vacations, etc. for NPs responsibilities.
• Has the authority to approve “bonus” shifts in accordance with SMG established guidelines.
• Has the authority to organize evaluation processes with input from peers and from supervising physicians.
• Has the authority to initiate disciplinary and corrective actions for NPs.
• Has the authority to perform clinical duties at highest acuity levels.

IV. A. Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

• All duties as included in the SMG NP job description.
• Receive and grant time off requests from CNPs based upon needs of the Department. As a policy, only one NP can be scheduled OFF at any given time. If there is an emergency and more than one NP needs to be off, time off can be granted on a case by case basis.
• Prepare and send out monthly “On-call, OR and Clinic” coverage schedule for ortho NPs making sure that all shifts are accounted for. May bring any substantial scheduling conflicts to the attention of the Practice Manager or Department Chair.
• Responsible for scheduling and approving any bonus shifts. Must be able to justify bonus shifts when asked for the reasoning behind the decision.
• Manage daily operations in terms of NP staffing, call & OR schedule.
• Troubleshoot and implement any operational changes in order to improve the quality of care being delivered. Any significant operational changes should be reviewed with the Department Chair and practice manager.
• Bring any NP related issues or concerns to the Chair & the practice manager’s attention on a timely basis
• Meet with Chair & Practice Manager on a monthly basis to review/discuss NP related matters.
• Assist in the recruitment of new NPs to the service and help facilitate the on-boarding process and initial training period.
• Initiate disciplinary action as seen fit and provide specific examples of individuals not meeting expectations.
• Recruits and facilitates hiring of NPs.
• Oversees the orientation of new NPs, specific service routines and expectations.
• Develops and continually modifies performance and professional standards.
• Maintains records related to educational opportunities, accreditation, and registration for midlevel practitioners. Keeps records of individual NP collaborative agreements, prescriptive privileges, practice guidelines, licensure, certifications, and CME.
• Represents NP practice to hospital committees and efforts.
• Acts as a liaison between individual NP ‘s and hospital administrators.
• Assures accurate and timely billing by NP’s as appropriate.
• Performs all duties associated with a NP hired to the hematology/oncology practice.

• Spontaneous report of any issues of patient risk, licensure compliance or clinical concern to appropriate hospital administrator and/or physician chief.
• Annual evaluations of mid-level practitioners with input from relevant physicians and other team members.
• Monthly review of activities and administrative issues with appropriate physicians and hospital administrator as indicated. This may include pertinent issues of coverage, clinical needs, etc. as may require clinical or administrative support and intervention.

VI. Accountability:

• Accountable for completion of duties and clinical expectation of services as assigned.
• Accountable for monthly schedules for call/coverage.
• Accountable for implementation of changes in coverage, recruiting, assignments etc., needed due to changes in patient need or skills available.
• Accountable for initial orientation (or oversight thereof) and probation & evaluation of new hires.

VII. Qualifications:

Minimum Education:
• Graduate of an accredited NP program

Minimum Experience:
• 2-4 years of clinically relevant experience as a Nurse Practitioner

Minimum skills/abilities:
• Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team and administration.
• Ability to supervise and coordinate professional staff.
• Ability to problem-solve, resolve conflict and instill team values.
• Proven clinical skills for rapid assessment and action in high acuity setting.

• Current Massachusetts license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner is required
• Current BLS and ACLS certification
